CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY- Northern Mindanao’s population breached the five-million mark based on the results of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-X) reported on Monday.
The total Northern Mindanao population is recorded at 5,022,768 as of 1 May 2020 or an increase by 333,466 from the 2015 count.
“With the results of the 2020 CPH and against the backdrop of the lingering pandemic, both public and private sectors need to re-assess and recalibrate their plans and projects,” NEDA-X Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, CESO III said during the regional dissemination forum on 26 July 2021.
The region’s annual population growth rates (APGR) over the past three censal periods continued to decelerate as there is a growing preference of Filipinos, particularly career-oriented young couples, to delay or forego marriage and have fewer children, and continuing adoption of responsible parenthood and family planning program.
“However, impact of COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the quarantine measures may have slightly changed demographic trends,” Cariño said.
She added that the increase in population results in greater demand for socioeconomic services, such as housing, health, water, sanitation, and education.
“Given these demographic changes, the region should provide its population better and adequate services and equal opportunities; and an enabling environment to increase human capital, create decent and sustainable employment, and achieve lifelong learning,” Cariño added.
The other discussant during the forum, Regional Director Neil Aldrin G. Omega of the Commission on Population Regional Office X emphasized the need for the region to address high fertility and teenage pregnancy rates.
Meanwhile, Research Director Dr. Ismael N. Talili of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines highlighted the importance of utilizing Census data in research to formulate evidence-based policies and decisions.
The PSA is set to release the other CPH disaggregated data in 2022. Details and highlights of the 2020 CPH can be accessed at the PSA website: www.psa.gov.ph.
